A couple of weeks ago I went with my brother to Miami, I was on a mission to visit the The El Rey de los Habanos factory.
The first cigar factory established by Don Pepin Garcia, Located in Miami's Little Havana at 1120-1124 SW 8th St., Miami Florida, 33130.Before we went into the El Rey De Los Habanos shop I went into a little place across the street called El Titan De Bronze. This was a good place to start the day. The woman who runs the place was very friendly and there was already a guy in the store taking photographs for a college project so it kind of broke the ice for my brother and I to check the place out. We watched a woman rolling a Cameroon Hemingway Short Story alternative. I bought a few of them and a couple of La Herencia Corona Gordas. After El Titan De Bronze we went to The El Credito Cigar Factory, 1106 SW 8th St, Miami, 33130 - (305) 858-4162. This is the factory where the Miami La Gloria Cubana Cigars are rolled. This was a great factory and the people rolling and banding the cigars were very open to visitors and having pictures taken. They seemed to thrive on it. In fact they prompted a few of the pictures. The woman Banding the Maduro Coronas was so proud of her boxed sticks that she opened the box to get me to take a picture of the dress box.
After the El Credito Factory we walked down two storefronts to finally visit the Don Pepin Garcia Shop. A woman promptly came to the counter of the tiny storefront and asked if we needed some help. I asked if we could see the factory and she said, "we do not give tours". I kind of got that vibe from the place as soon as we walked in. It reminded me of a members only club and we didn't belong! I looked at the sticks that were all priced the same as I've found them in local B&M's. Then realized, Of course we can't tour the factory because the workers are too busy making $8 - $16 Tatuaje' and Don Pepin Garcia Cigars back there! I bought a few sticks and ogled the Tatuaje "A" for $16.00; This was a massive 9" stick that looked really nice. However I didn't have a big enough traveldor with me and I didn't have time to smoke the thing right then. I really should have bought that stick! Anyway, I did get a few Tats and a couple of Don Pepin Blue Labels. I smoked one of the blues and it was by far and away the best Non-Cuban cigar I have ever tasted.
All I can think is that they must have aged this thing for a while before putting it out there on the shelf, It was almost a maduro wrapper and fantastically spicy. Just marvelous!From Don Pepin's we drove off to the Cuban Crafters shop. Cuban Crafters Cigars, 2313 N.W. 7th Avenue Miami, Florida 33127 . This Place isn't a storefront but rather the location from where all the mail orders ship. Upon entering we were kindly greeted by a young man that was really friendly. He thought it so cool that I had tracked the location down and that we had just visited the other factories. "You guys are really into cigars", he says. "Yeah, slightly" I respond. Well sit back, look around and let me get you something to sample. He comes back with a Beck Torpedo and we all sit back and smoke the stick. Nice cigar, in fact I liked it so much I bought a sampler. The prices at the store were just as the prices in the catalog, but no shipping fees. We bought a few samplers and hygrometers and I bought a really nice stainless pocket cutter.
